Welcome to GeoNews May...
Dear  ,
Although the whole EFG team is still working from home, we had a very busy month full of new activities and publications: We are thrilled to launch EFGeoMentoring, an extension of our existing mentoring programme which now also addresses mid-career and senior professionals who are looking for career advice. In our Annual Report 2019 you can discover our main activities throughout the past year. The EFGeoBlog comes up with a couple of new articles featuring inspiring geoscience outreach activities. Last but not least, we kindly invite you to fill in our annual Employment Survey to help us produce a comprehensive report on the evolution of our profession in Europe and beyond. Enjoy the reading and stay safe!

EFGeoMentoring: Professional Career Mentoring & Coaching for Geoscientists
Mentoring has proved to be beneficial both for mentees and mentors at all career stages. EFG is therefore extending its current early career mentoring programme and is from now on offering mentoring and coaching services to mid-career and senior geoscience professionals. The new EFGeoMentoring scheme aims at increasing international networking and supporting the life-long learning and CPD requirements of experienced geoscience professionals. It allows mentees to benefit from insider knowledge about work perspectives in other geosciences sectors and countries.
As a complementary service, we aim at providing mentees with access to a database of professional coaches who may advise on specific aspects relating to their career planning.
The EFGeoMentoring scheme is running on a continuous basis, matching mentees and mentors upon demand. Participants collaborate over a fixed period of 9 months.
To participate, please check the conditions for participation and submit your application:

EFGeoBlog: Sustainability and Energy transition: an opportunity for the next generation of geoscientists
This contribution by Pierluigi Vecchia from StrataGeoResearch, a spin-off of the University of Chieti-Pescara (IT), is a note on a three-days course he held at the PhD school in Geological Sciences at University of RomaTRE, organised for PhD and Master students, just before the lockdown that affected Italy and the world. He presents his views on the role geoscientists can play within the energy transition.

The CROWDTHERMAL video: Empowering EU citizens to develop geothermal
Despite its huge potential and its important role in decarbonising our society, geothermal energy represented only 3% of the European Union’s total energy consumption in 2017. The main goal of the Horizon 2020 project CROWDTHERMAL, which is coordinated by EFG, is to empower European citizens to directly participate in the development of geothermal projects. To do so, new financial models for crowdfunding will be formulated. In parallel, the CROWDTHERMAL team will analyse the perception of geothermal energy and will develop a public engagement approach making use of social media and other engaging communication tools. Three case studies in Hungary, Iceland, and Spain will validate the findings of the project. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/2trUcbXcisM

Glossary of Geology Online Service
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is providing free access to its Glossary of Geology Online Service until 30 June 2020. The online Glossary provides access to the more than 39,000 glossary entries contained in the Fifth Edition of the print Glossary. Users can learn the difference between look-alike pairs, such as sylvanite (a mineral) and sylvinite (a rock); the origin of terms; the meaning of abbreviations and acronyms common in the geoscience vocabulary; the dates many terms were first used; the meaning of certain prefixes; and the preferred term of two or more synonyms. Many Glossary entries contain a syllabification guide and background information. | Read more

AGI/AIPG Geosciences Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
According to the agreement between the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and EFG, the Federation officially recognises, within its own CPD system, the points (CEUs) awarded via the AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative GOLI. This is particularly interesting for all European Geologist title holders because they also benefit from reduced registration fees for all courses.
