Message from our CEO

To Our Camp Fire Family –

We sincerely hope this finds you safe, healthy, and adapting well to this new way of
experiencing life. The dedicated staff members of Camp Fire Samish are working hard
to design alternative delivery systems for our programs, juggle new responsibilities,
manage an ever-changing budget, and all without forgetting to celebrate our successes!

As we progress into autumn, local and coastal wildfires and the accompanying smoke add yet another hindrance to the already stifled rental season. Because of this, we
made the unprecedented decision to close Camp Kirby in September; several months
earlier than usual. Additionally, all after-school enrichment, friend-raising gatherings,
and fundraising events have been cancelled through the end of 2020. Many staff
members remain furloughed. The office is operating on limited hours, and more layoffs
may occur before we are able to resume business as usual.

Despite these difficulties, our Corporate Board of Directors, staff, and volunteer
community have been working relentlessly to raise funds, create new ways to serve
local youth, and to share our resources with families.

  • We were blessed to receive several grants, loans, and heartfelt donations, which have kept us solvent to date.
  • While providing a COVID-safe environment, we hosted over two months of Family Camping at Camp Kirby. It was wonderful to see alumni reconnect with Camp and watch youth campers share their experiences with family members.
  • Camp Fire Clubs are unable to meet in traditional ways, so clubs have transitioned to virtual meetings and continue to thrive.
  • Fall Camporee was modified to accommodate family groups and programming was individualized to maintain social distancing requirements.

The world may be different, but we have not stopped finding ways to provide for youth
and guide them in finding their spark. As such, we will continue to keep you informed of
our plans, our hopes, and of 2021 events and programs as they unfold. In the
meantime, please be safe and take care of each other!

Study & Play Studio is where Kindergarteners through 3rd Graders can participate in their remote schooling from the Camp Fire Samish WoHeLo room, Monday through Thursday 8:00am to 4:00pm. Youth will need to bring their virtual school materials, plus snacks and lunch.

Students can learn with us for the day or for the week, whatever your family needs.
Staff will be available to help students log into their virtual classrooms, answer questions about assignments, and provide crafts and activities when their school work is finished. To maintain social distancing requirements, only ten spots are available each day. Please contact Sasha at sasha@campfiresamish.org for any questions or to register your student.

Camp Fire Samish has been blessed with a stellar Corporate Board of Directors. Our bylaws, however, state that after 3 terms (6 years), members must step down. This coming April, we will be devastated to lose Mark Roetcisoender, our Treasurer since fall of 2015.

Mark began his professional career as a CPA nearly 40 years ago and currently heads the VSH Mount Vernon office and its Skagit County operations. He has spent timeless hours with Camp Fire, scrutinizing our books, assisting the bookkeeper, and reviewing financial statements, audits, reviews, and tax filings. Mark is a genuinely fabulous human, with clever wit and an abundance of common sense. So yes, they'll be big shoes to fill!

If you are an accountant looking to acquire practical experience, give back to our community, and work alongside some great and passionate board members, please consider reaching out for consideration. Corporate Board terms are two years. In-person meetings (which alternate between Skagit and Whatcom Counties) or conference call meetings are generally held ten times per year. Board members are required to attend a minimum of six meetings each year and attend major fundraising events.

If you would like to recommend a candidate or if you would like to serve on the Camp Fire Samish & Camp Kirby Corporate Board of Directors yourself, please contact me at erin@campfiresamish.org or call (360) 255-7554. I can answer your questions, put you in touch with a current board member, and/or begin the vetting process. Elections will be held at our Annual Meeting in April of 2021.
