This summer has definitely not gone the way that I pictured when I started planning for it a year ago, but it has shaped up to be a fun adventure here at Kirby. While we have been unable to run any of our traditional camp programs, we have had fun welcoming individual families to Camp for Camping at Kirby! Since early July, we have been renting individual cabins and tent camping sites on a nightly basis. We might not be doing the things we’re used to doing at Camp, like shooting for a bullseye at the archery range, eating meals together in the lodge, or scaling the fourth wall at the climbing tower, but the magic of Kirby is still alive and well.
It has been so much fun watching alumni introduce their families to Camp for the first time, seeing campers showing their parents how to build the ultimate beach fort, and watching new friends discover Kirby for the very first time. It has been so much fun, and you have all been so great, that we have decided to keep the fun going through the end of August! Registration is now open for Camping at Kirby for August 14th-16th, 21st – 23rd, and 28th-30th.
If I don’t get to see you later this month, I look forward to seeing you in 2021!

Camp Fire Samish’s Club members have been meeting virtually up to three times per week since March. These youth have made a variety of different slime recipes and no-bake snacks. They have experimented with water filtration and density towers, as well as participated in scavenger hunts and drawing games. Each week we discover how much we can do virtually! Our Club members are adaptable, positive, and striving to do their best. Thanks to our incredible Club families, these youth are thriving and gaining new experiences each week, even during this unprecedented time. We look forward to gaining new Club members, families, and friends. Registration is now open for the 2020-2021 membership year.

The novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, with its resulting rules, regulations, and limitations
have left us struggling to remain relevant and to continue serving youth. With no end in
sight, we have adapted many programs and created additional curriculum to fit virtual
delivery. This virtual delivery is basically the only way that we can engage most
participants and provide some quasi-human interaction.
We have also rolled out Camp-in-a-box to give kids a little taste of Camp Kirby from their own homes. Full of activities, crafts, experiments, and a little Kirby swag, it’s as
close as some youth will get to a summer camping experience this year. The financial impact for Camp Fire Samish is devastating. All enrichment and self-reliance classes were halted in March. Restrictions on gatherings have resulted in the cancellation of all Camp rental groups, our traditional June Day Camp, and Resident Camp at Kirby. Every in-person fundraising event, constituent gathering, and community celebration was cancelled. In some cases, these events were cancelled, rescheduled, and cancelled again.
Depressed yet?
Despite all this doom and gloom, we are determined to ensure that Camp Fire Samish & Camp Kirby will survive. We will not abandon ship! As Camp Fire works through these issues, we invite you to share your input, feedback, and resources. Gather your family and rent a cabin at Kirby, enroll your child in an online program, or just share our pages with your friends. Together, we can ensure that the magic of Kirby and in-person Camp Fire programs remain intact to serve youth when we emerge on the other side of this pandemic. And when it’s over, we’ll be here to “inspire and empower all youth to discover their spark, connect with others, develop leadership skills, build character, and thrive in the natural world”! Remember, we are all in this together and we need each other to make it through!
