A.SPIRE Members Meeting 24 June 2020

This year, due to the COVID-19 situation and restrictions on physical meetings, some changes in the organisation of SPIRE 2020 General Assembly meetings were required and an informal Members meeting was held on 24 June virtually. We were delighted to see that so many of our members participated.

The event signaled all the resolutions to be voted on at our Extraordinary General Assembly, highlighted the evolution of A.SPIRE and introduced Processes4Planet (P4Planet), the new name of our enhanced Partnership as we move forward towards Horizon Europe. Further information on P4Planet will be available soon.

The event also presented a membership overview featuring profiles of new supporters who have joined A.SPIRE since the last General Assembly in February 2019.

The event showed the broad and inclusive nature of the A.SPIRE community and the wide relevance of our new Roadmap 2050 for the Process Industry and other industrial sectors.

Hubs for Circularity Workshop - October 2020

A date for your diary. On 6 and 7 October A.SPIRE will be organising a workshop on our Hubs for Circularity (H4C) concept. The event will take place online and/ or in Brussels depending on the COVID19 situation at the time.

On the first day there will be presentations and discussion on Industrial Symbiosis and Circularity with leaders in the field. Industrial experts will share the needs and cross-sectorial collaboration required to reach circularity within the process industries and present some successful initiatives from different A.SPIRE sectors. Participation in this session will be by invitation.

The second day will be an open dissemination event to promote the H4C concept and the role of process industries in it, and to engage in a wider discussion with Commission representatives, A.SPIRE members and other stakeholders..

Chemical Engineering in the Plant of the Future

How are the process industries being transformed? Who is taking ownership of the changes and looking to the future? And how is this evolution impacting Chemical Engineering as a discipline? These questions and more will be addressed in a two half-day online event organised by the French Chemical Engineering Society (SFGP) under the auspices of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE).

The Third European Forum on New Technologies will take place via Zoom on the morning of Friday 4 September and the afternoon of Friday 11 September and will provide participants with a broad and precise vision of the future of the process industries. Speakers, including contributions from SPIRE, will address the place of the industry in today’s society, new ways for process design and shifts in the operation of processes, as well as how training may need to be rethought to meet these new needs.

The Plant of the Future is being built as of now. Whether you are a professional working in chemical and process industries or in academia, if you are curious to discover the future of Chemical Engineering, join this free online event to discuss and deepen your knowledge!

European R&I Days 2020

The European Commission is organising its European Research & Innovation Days 2020 on 22, 23 and 24 September. This year the event will be held virtually.

As usual the event will showcase Europe’s best and brightest research, science and innovation and will feature a high-level Policy Conference and the interactive Science is Wonderful! public exhibition.

Our Executive Director will represent A.SPIRE as a speaker in the session “European Partnerships – Stepping up the game” within the Horizon Europe Hub section on 23 September from 14h00. This session will try to answer the question: How can European Partnerships step up efforts to achieve the transitions that Europe needs? The session continues the high-level discussion at last year's R&I Days on the new policy approach to Partnerships. There will also be an InfoDay presentation on the European Green Deal calls on the 23rd at 16h00.

You can find a draft programme for the event here and further information here. Follow developments around the event on Twitter @EUScienceInnov and if you want to share your thoughts on the shape of future research and innovation policy use the hashtag #RiDaysEU.

Skills Alliance for Industrial Symbiosis

The Skills Alliance for Industrial Symbiosis SPIRE-SAIS is moving forward despite the COVID19 restrictions. The project started with an analysis of technological and economic developments concerning Industrial Symbiosis and Energy Efficiency and the related skills requirements.

Within this activity a list of relevant projects was made and analysed. However, an important point is to get direct and current information from the companies, research and technology organisations and other stakeholders working in the industries. Therefore, the project has developed an online questionnaire that has just been launched. It is important to get your feedback because this analysis will be the backbone of the Skills Alliance and Strategy development.

A Steering Committee of Sector Representatives was established as the main joint connection point for communication and cooperation with the SPIRE sectors. Via the sector associations Information about the project and requests for feedback and participation will be relayed via the sector associations. The questionnaire is the first step in this direction by collecting industry perspectives and exchanging results.

OPEN CONSULTATIONS
EASME Survey - Challenges and opportunities in energy efficiency and renewable energy

The Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) is currently assessing relevant EU-funded projects supporting the market uptake of energy efficiency measures in industry. Specifically, 41 selected projects funded under two EU Programmes: Intelligent Energy – Europe II (IEE-II) and Horizon 2020.

As part of this assessment a survey of EU and National Industry-related stakeholders has been launched by consultants Ricardo Energy & Environment on the most pressing challenges and needs for the near future: 2021-2027.

The aim is to identify specific market priorities and content gaps for the forthcoming LIFE programme to tackle the global challenges ahead and accelerate the energy transition of the Industry and Service sectors. The next LIFE programme will be its first multiannual work programme and will cover the period 2021-2024.

This survey is available here. Do not miss the opportunity to express your views on the main challenges and measures in industrial energy efficiency. The survey should take no more than 30 minutes to complete and the deadline for submission is 4 September 2020.

P4Planet and CSP roadmaps

In 2019, A.SPIRE, ESTEP and EUROFER signed a joint declaration on the alignment of the roadmaps of the candidate Partnerships Processes4Planet and Clean Steel in anticipation of Horizon Europe and to maintain a positive and constructive dialogue.

A.SPIRE launched a consultation on its Processes4Planet 2050 roadmap in November 2019 and are currently updating the roadmap with the input from our new sector members. We will share a revised public version in the Autumn.

The European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) has now published the Clean Steel Partnership (CSP) roadmap/ Strategic Research and Innovation agenda (SRIA) and started a public consultation on it. The A.SPIRE community is invited to contribute in the framework of our continuing collaboration.

Sector News

Cepi welcomes energy system integration

New A.SPIRE sector member the Confederation of European Paper Industries (Cepi) has welcomed the publication of the European Commission’s Energy System Integration Strategy, which aims to make the energy system more ‘circular’ with energy efficiency at its core and leading towards effective, affordable and deep decarbonisation of the European economy.

“Our sector is already acting as a hub for smart sector integration. Moving forward towards a climate-neutral society, our sector has more to offer, and to gain, from a more integrated energy system,” said Jori Ringman, Cepi Director General.

Actions proposed by the strategy include increased emphasis on demand side flexibility, Combined Heat and Power and the role of industrial thermal storage; support for biogas production; financing for electrification in industry and for synthetic fuels using captured CO2; and capacity building for rural circular energy communities.
