My view on the Orgel Festival Holland Alkmaar: “In the centre of one of the most fascinating organ landscapes, the city of Alkmaar hosts one of the most important international organ events: the Orgel Festival Holland. Especially the combination of concerts, excursions, masterclasses, lectures, special events and the international organ competition guarantees a unique contribution to an intense cultural exchange on the basis of one of the most fascinating instruments: the organ. The great variety of themes, styles and instruments will lead to a programme, which is equally interesting and full of inspirational moments for the professional organist, researchers, students and the different groups of audiences. In 2021 there will be a special event: the 400th anniversary of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck's death. At the same time, the German National Music Council has nominated the organ as „Instrument of the Year“. Therefore, it is an extraordinary pleasure and honour for me, to be able to make a contribution to celebrate these facts in Alkmaar during next year's festival in Alkmaar. I am looking forward to a week full of new perspectives, which will hopefully give us a guiding-line out of a time of crisis without larger events and personal meetings.”
On the theme of my masterclass: “Nearly twenty years ago, I was lucky to be one of the first musicians to perform and record Schumann's complete works for pedal piano on an original instrument, which brought totally new insights into the performance practice of these pieces to my mind. Since that moment I have continued and sharpened my thoughts about how to perform these extraordinary and unique pieces on the organ. The combination of knowledge about historical performance practice and individual ways how to transfer the pieces into the „organ's language“ requires great sensitity and musical taste. The Festival class will try to show some of these aspects on chosen examples of all three pedal piano / organ cycles by Robert Schumann, who has stated in his „Musikalische Haus- und Lebensregeln“: „If there is any possibility: Never hesitate to play and exercise yourself on the organ.“
