IAU and UOC completed the Innovative Education for Unshaped Futures (IE4UF) in October. The series, composed of 6 chapters, addresses the digital transformation and the changes that will shape the future of higher education. The entire playlist is available on the IAU YouTube channel. 
 
Also available on-demand is Health and Well-Being in Higher Education – The Impact of the Pandemic organised with Education International (EI), IAU, and Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI). IAU Board Meeting
 
The IAU Administrative Board met online from 26 to 28 October 2021 to discuss IAU activities 2020-21. The board received the IAU audited statements, the annual financial report and adopted the budget for 2022. Plans for the IAU academic year starting in October were fine-tuned and adopted as well. These include the drafting of the new IAU Strategic Plan and a new Membership engagement strategy. Also finalised were preparations for IAU’s contributions to the UNESCO WHEC2022, The Global Forum on the Future of HE in Dublin in June and the IAU 16th General Conference at University College Dublin (UCD) in October 2022. The theme of the General Conference is the Relevance and Value of Higher Education for the Future. An exciting year lies ahead for all members of the global higher education community!

IAU, ACU & AUF Strengthen their Partnership
 
The IAU met with our partners ACU and AUF at the IAU headquarters at UNESCO in Paris on 29 October to finalise upcoming partnership projects. During the meeting, two focus areas discussed were the key role higher education plays in sustainable development and the future of international South-South and North-South mobility.

Innovative Doctoral Course for Sustainability (IDOCOS)
 
In October, the IDOCOS project partners met in Stockholm to review the project implementation and outline the next steps. The meeting welcomed partner institutions from Africa who participated in a virtual session included in the meeting. Accordingly, institutions in Africa are invited to respond to the 10-minute survey on doctoral education and international collaboration. Respondents will receive the deliverables free of charge and an invitation to participate in future engagement opportunities.

New COST Action
 
COST Association (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) announced on 5 October 2021 the financing of a new Action for: European Network on International Student Mobility: Connecting Research and Practice. The Action addresses the pressing need for systematic interdisciplinary and international knowledge exchange on theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, findings, and best practice examples. It also fosters the translation of scientific results into recommendations for international student mobility practice.

Ahead of COP26, several initiatives took place to stress higher education's role in research, teaching, student and community engagement. MECCE project launches
Call for Case Studies
 
The MECCE project is calling for applications for Funded Case Studies of innovative climate change communication and education (CCE) to inform global understandings of quality CCE. In its second year, the project aims to advance global climate action through improved quality and quantity of Climate Education. The project officially launched in September 2020, and since then, the team has mapped and researched climate change education, launched regional hubs, and created a new website . As an organisational partner, IAU has been involved in developing and carrying out the project, and regularly attends MECCE meetings.

IAU at EAIE Community Exchange 2021
 
On 30 September - 1 October, the IAU joined more than 2000 participants from 70 countries at the EAIE Community Exchange 2021. The Community Exchange was a unique event offering over 70 hours of engaging live and on-demand content for participants to explore. This year's theme, 'Bolder. Braver. Go.' called participants to embrace bold ideas for tangible action and emphasise that the time for change is now.
IAU ensured a strong presence through our active participation in several sessions. Hilligje van't Land, IAU Secretary General, chaired the live Spotlight on social responsibility and spoke at the on-demand session The role of universities in ensuring democracy and sustainable development.

Launch of GICSRD, a first for the Caribbean
 
The Global Institute for Climate-Smart and Resilient Development (GICSRD) received a virtual launch on Thursday, 7 October. Top experts from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) resource the new Institute. A first-of-its-kind for the Caribbean, this virtual hub consolidates The UWI's research and teaching on climate change, disaster risk reduction, resilience and sustainable development. The UWI, the IAU Global HESD Cluster Lead for SDG 13: Climate Action, is uniquely positioned to head this much-needed facility. Its collective resources and expertise are based on decades of research and current standing among the top 1.5% of universities worldwide.

New online course Euro-Mediterranean Intercultural Trends
 
November welcomes a new edition of the online course Euro-Mediterranean Intercultural Trends, produced by the Anna Lindh Foundation and IAU Member, UNIMED, the Mediterranean Universities Union. The course reflects the Intercultural Trends Report of the Anna Lindh Foundation, a major research effort based on interviews with more than 13,000 people across 13 Mediterranean countries. The aim was to learn about participant expectations, concerns, interests and values.
The fall edition of the course will start on 10 November 2020 and finish on 7 December 2020, lasting four weeks for a total of approximately 12 hours of study

AUF releases whitepaper on the Scientific Francophonie
 
The Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) released the whitepaper on the Scientific Francophonie (Livre blanc de la Francophonie scientifique). The whitepaper contains thematic and geographical analyses, tables, graphs and territorial focus. It is the result of a consultation undertaken in 2020 in over 90 countries. It provides an overview of the French-speaking world of science and will guide the AUF's strategy over the next four years.

New Secretary General of AAU assumes Office
 
Congratulations to Prof. Olusola Bandele Oyewole for his appointment as the new Secretary General of the Association of African Universities (AAU). The IAU and the AAU are longstanding partners. We had the great pleasure to work with his predecessor, Prof. Etienne Ehilé, who became a true friend and strong partner. We wish him well with his new plans. We now look forward to working with Prof. Oyewole and to developing new joint initiatives together for the benefit of HE in Africa and globally.

The IAU contributed to the new book COVID-19 and Higher Education in the Global Context: Exploring Contemporary Issues and Challenges published by STAR Scholars Network.
Giorgio Marinoni, IAU Manager HE and Internationalization, in collaboration with Ekaterina Minaeva, Analyst, Institute of Education, Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russian Federation, wrote a chapter titled Global Collaboration for Global Solution in Academia: Opportunities and Challenges for the book. 
Within a global context, this well-timed book captures a variety of topics, including student mobility, global partnerships and collaboration, student health and wellbeing, enrolment management, employability, and graduate education.

Managing Social Responsibility in Universities

IAU is pleased to announce that 28 Latin American and Caribbean countries are now updated in the IAU WHED (World Higher Education Database) Portal.The WHED is the key resource for the practical implementation of the UNESCO Global Convention on the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications. The WHED supports global academic mobility and international cooperation while reinforcing quality assurance and credentialing.
