IAU congratulates Gothenburg University on the 2021 Gothenburg International Research Conference on SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth that took place 26-27 August. Keynote speakers included Eva Wiberg, Rector, Gothenburg University (GU), Pam Fredman, IAU President and Former Rector of GU, Chantal Line Carpentier, UNCTAD, and Steven Stone from UN Environment. Experts shared their insights on sustainable and inclusive economic growth, employment, tourism and partnerships.

The 9th World Sustainability Forum will take place virtually 13-15 September. IAU is organising the session on Higher Education and Research – How universities around the world engage with Sustainability and build partnerships for the SDGs. International Forum & Expo U. Guanajuato 2021

The University of Guanajuato is organising the International Forum and Expo for Academic Collaboration 2021 from 21-23 September. This year's theme is Rethinking Universities Glocal Engagement and experts from across the world will share their thoughts and experiences on the subject. IAU President Pam Fredman will speak at the session on Women in academic leadership - an important contribution to the role of universities to equality in society, which will take place on 22 September.

CoE Call for Best Practices: Deadline extended
|
| |
The Council of Europe Education Department has opened a call for best practices in promoting academic integrity in higher education institutions in Europe focusing on solutions found to promote academic integrity during the COVID-19 crisis. Higher education institutions recognised as belonging to the education system of one of the 50 States parties to the European Cultural Convention, as well as student unions, are eligible to apply. Deadline for applications is 20 September 2021.

The latest edition of Higher Education Policy (HEP), the Association's quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, has just been released. Amongst others, articles look at university mergers in Finland, transformation of public institutions in Italy from the perspective of rectors and department chairs, quality assurance in Iran, and employment and wage gaps among Canadian male and female graduates. Report on Internationalization of Higher Education in the Mediterranean
|

The Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED) has published a report commissioned by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) on The Internationalisation of Higher Education in the Mediterranean – Current and Prospective Trends. It presents a detailed context analysis with a focus on mobility flows to and from the 10 target countries, complemented by a wide range of inspiring and scalable practices, as well as an overview of the role played by regional organisations in providing opportunities, creating synergies, and making resources available for HEIs in the region. Giorgio Marinoni, IAU's HE and Internationalisation Manager, was part of the Steering Committee which supported the study throughout.

2020 in Review: Looking Back to Look Forward

The academic year 2019-2020 was marked by unforeseen challenges for all of us across the world. The IAU, as an association with global outreach, was also deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The IAU Annual Report 2020 illustrates the commitment and resilience shown by the IAU Secretariat, the Administrative Board Members, as well as all our members and partners. Thanks to your active participation, we were able to innovate and adapt to offer high quality services and opportunities to engage the global higher education community. We are also pleased to present this short video exchange between IAU President Pam Fredman and Secretary-General Hilligje van't Land, in which they highlight the key challenges and opportunities facing the higher education community worldwide, and discuss the way forward.

Managing Social Responsibility in Universities
|

This newly-published book is part of a new project on social responsibility in universities. It explores the concept of university social responsibility drawing on a wide range of geographical perspectives, and examines the diverse aspirations of universities. It provides a storytelling framework for teaching sustainability in management education as an approach to strengthening the social role of universities and showcases how a service-learning approach could promote the engagement of universities within the community. The book is valuable reading for academics who are researching sustainability management, corporate and organisational social responsibility and other related social sciences.
