Africa Knows! It is time to decolonise minds
 
2020 is the year in which 17 countries on the African continent celebrate 60 years of independence. IAU Secretary-General Hilligje van't Land participated in a round table titled 'Leaving no Knowledge behind' to discuss what the future of knowledge cooperation with and among African countries, European countries and beyond could look like. Part of a wider international conference – Africa Knows! taking place from 2 December 2020  to 28 February 2021 – this session was organised by the Association of African Universities, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Nuffic and IAU.

UNESCO Futures of Education Initiative
 
IAU sits on the Advisory Board to UNSECO Futures of Education – a global initiative aimed at re-imagining how knowledge and learning can help create a brighter future for humanity and for our planet. We call on the HE community to help inspire future projects in this context. Building social impact and civic engagement
 
Universities play a crucial role in creating new knowledge and educating the people who can apply this knowledge to benefit the society. IAU Member Central European University has launched the tenth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. York University, IAU Cluster Lead for SDG4: Quality Education, is organizing an International Virtual Conference on Sustainable and Inclusive Internationalization: Reimagining Approaches in Higher Education in an Era of Global Uncertainties. From 20 - 22 January 2021, the event will bring together scholars, international mobility professionals and practitioners, policymakers, sustainability experts and other stakeholders to discuss the evolving status of international mobility in higher education in Canada and elsewhere in the world.

EHEA 2020 Ministerial Conference
 
The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) held their first ever virtual Ministerial Conference on 19 November. The Conference provided an opportunity to foster a debate on common objectives for the next decade of the EHEA and further strengthen cooperation, thereby ensuring a better future for our higher education systems and our societies.

Free to Think 2020
 
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to surge, threats to scholars, students, and higher education institutions persist unabated.​ Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of higher education institutions and individuals working to protect threatened scholars, prevent attacks on higher education, and promote academic freedom and related values. Their annual report Free to Think 2020 analyzes 341 attacks on higher education communities in 58 countries.

Education for Sustainable Development: A Roadmap
 
The Education Sector of UNESCO has published
a roadmap for implementing the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development. A new framework – ESD for 2030 – was adopted by the 206th UNESCO Executive Board and the 40th UNESCO General Conference and acknowledged by the 74th UN General Assembly. Building on previous efforts, the new roadmap places a stronger focus on education’s central contribution to the achievement of the SDGs, and directly contributes to SDG 4 on quality and inclusive education.
