The International Association of Universities has been the Global Voice of Higher Education since 1950! As part of its initiatives to keep advancing the higher education sector globally and to offer a platform for exchange and discussions amongst higher education leaders and professionals in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, IAU launched its first series of free webinars on the Future of Higher Education - short, medium and long-term perspectives in May. The recordings and presentations from past webinars are available here. 
 
IAU is pleased to offer a new series of free webinars on the Future of Higher Education related to its thematic priorities - Technology, Internationalization, Leadership and Sustainable Development - every week on Tuesday, from 15 September until 9 December 2020.

 The Future of Higher Education - Digital Dimension: Exploring the different modes of learning

This webinar will discuss the lessons learnt from the experience of remote teaching and learning from the perspective of different types of higher education institutions. It will explore the opportunities deriving from this experience and how it could contribute to innovation in teaching and learning.

22 & 29 September, and every Tuesday in October, November, and until 9 December.

IAU publishes a new report on regional & national perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 on higher education
 
Following the publication of its First Global Survey on the impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education which provides an analysis of the disruption caused by COVID-19 and an overview of the first measures undertaken by higher education institutions worldwide, IAU releases a complementary report providing Regional and national perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 on higher education. This report includes contributions from several IAU partners.

IAU joins UNESCO Global Education Coalition
 
IAU is pleased to join UNESCO Global Education Coalition which was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that #LearningNeverStops. The Coalition seeks to facilitate inclusive learning opportunities for youth during this period of sudden and unprecedented educational disruption. The Coalition's three main objectives are: supporting the equitable continuation of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a full and fair return to education following the pandemic, strengthening learning systems for the future. IAU supports, in particular, the continuation of higher education.

IAU at the UN High Level Political Forum 2020
 
The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the yearly conference of the United Nations where governments, UN Agencies and civil society come together to discuss the achievements that have been made towards Agenda 2030. This year, the event was held virtually and was dedicated to the theme: "Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development."
IAU, along with partners and HESD Cluster leaders, co-organized and took part in a number of virtual workshops and webinars!

IAU strengthens Collaboration with ACU and AUF
 
To strenghten our collaboration and commitment to common priorities, we have formalised our partnership with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed during the 2020 UN High-level Political Forum. The MoU outlines the associations’ commitment to three priority areas for collaboration: higher education for sustainable development; quality and vitality of higher education systems; and internationalisation in higher education.

Podcast: Pam Fredman presents the International Association of Universities
 
IAU President, Pam Fredman, was invited by Interlace PODCAST to speak about the history of the International Association of Universities and its commitments towards the global higher education sector. Challenges due to Covid-19 regarding various aspects of higher education such as internationalization and global partnerships were also discussed. Pam Fredman also underlined the fact that inequality has been a major issue during the Covid-19 pandemic and that it is the responsibility of associations such as IAU to help make things evolve.

A new statement on the importance of international higher education and research
 
IAU acts as the coordinator of the Network of International Education Associations (NIEA). In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, NIEA launches a statement reaffirming the importance of international higher education and research, calling for governments and higher education institutions around the globe to support international collaboration as an essential means to finding solutions for global issues manifesting differently in various parts of the world.
IAU SDG 12 Cluster and IAU President join virtual conference hosted by Moi University
 
The virtual International Conference​ on Phytochemistry, Textile & Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development, hosted by Moi University, Kenya, took place online from 12-14 August.
IAU President, Pam Fredman, spoke at the opening of the Conference and stressed the important role of universities in teaching, research and advocacy for sustainable development.
In addition, a panel discussion on SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) was organized by the IAU Cluster Members.
A COVID-19 Response Toolkit for Indian higher education institutions
 
IAU Members, O.P Jindal University and the Association of Indian Universities, released a Covid-19 response Toolkit - Institutional Resilience for academic planning and continuity - for higher education insitutions in India. The Toolkit aims to serve as a checklist for HEIs to help them make decisions and carry out efficiently their tasks related to academic affairs during and post COVID-19.
International Conference on Industrial revolution on computing, mobility and manufacturing
 
Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) will host the International Conference on the 4th Industrial Revolution on Computing, Mobility, and Manufacturing (CMM 2020) which will take place in Khobar, Saudi Arabia on 8-10 December. The conference aims to stimulate scientific exchange and promote sustainable development and international networking.
 
 
How many students are at risk of not returning to school?
 
UNESCO published a paper presenting the findings of a simulation exercise covering 180 countries and territories, which estimates that around 24 million students (from pre-primary to tertiary education) will be at risk of not returning to education institutions in 2020, including care centres, schools, universities and other training institutions.
These findings point to the need to strengthen the resilience of education systems and address the drivers of education exclusion.

IAU's Bibliography on higher education and research for sustainable development
 
This Bibliography collected by IAU provides references of monographs, documents, reports and periodical articles on Higher Education and Sustainable Development. The first section details Declarations on Sustainable Development by higher education networks and institutions, both internationally and regionally. The second section of the Bibliography provides a selection of publications (books, reports, periodical articles) from the past five years.

Universities are key to achieving sustainable development
 
IAU Secretary General, Hilligje van't Land, ACU Secretary General, Joanna Newman, and Slim Khalbous, Rector of AUF, agree that it is time for the international community to recognise the fundamental importance of higher education to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) set by the UN Agenda 2030. They also point out that universities need to commit and dedicate themselves to helping the world achieve those goals.
