Join IAU at the virtual UN High-Level Political Forum
on Sustainable Development, 7-16 July 2020
The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the yearly conference of the United Nations where governments, UN Agencies and civil society come together to discuss the achievements that have been made towards Agenda 2030. This year, the event will be held virtually and will be dedicated to the theme: "Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development." IAU holds the Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) which is the highest status granted by the United Nations to non-governmental organizations. IAU thus has this unique opportunity to take an active part in the HLPF.
IAU, along with some of its Members and HESD Cluster leaders, will organize and take part in a number of virtual side events for which you may register to attend. Among others, IAU co-organizes a workshop on 13 July on ‘Teaching, Learning and Integrating the SDGs at universities and beyond - Linking to the Decade of Action’. IAU will also share a virtual exhibition space with ACU and AUF!

IAU webinar series on the Future of Higher Education
|
| |
IAU pursues its series of free webinars on the Future of Higher Education providing a unique opportunity to engage with higher education experts on various themes related to the future of higher education. Six webinars have been conducted so far, in collaboration with different IAU partners and Members. Recordings and presentations from previous webinar sessions are available on IAU website.
The next webinar session will be hosted on 7 July 2020 and will discuss "Perspectives on reopening strategies at universities around the world."

"Imagining Higher Education in a Post Pandemic World" -IAU Horizons call for contributions

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutions had to adapt quickly to a completely different situation in order to carry out their mission and continue their activities despite the disruptions.
The 'In Focus' section of the next issue (25.2) of IAU Horizons is an opportunity for higher education leaders to provide reflections and analytical perspectives on how the crisis will influence the future of higher education in a post-pandemic world. You may send your expression of interest to contribute a paper by 6 July 2020.

Online Consultation: Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

UNESCO is developing a global standard-setting instrument on the ethics of artificial intelligence to define shared values and principles, and identify concrete policy measures on the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI). UNESCO has just launched the open consultation on the draft recommendation. This is a unique opportunity for universities to contribute to shaping the norms and principles that will inform future policy development in the area of ethics and AI! Contribute to its development by responding to the survey by 31 July 2020.

IAU takes part in CDPPE virtual meeting and joins Council of Europe Education Task Force

IAU, represented by Dr. Hilligje van't Land, IAU Secretary General, took part in the Council of Europe Steering Committee for Education Policy and Practice (CDPPE) virtual meeting on 11-12 June to discuss the state-of-play around Europe and the development of Education policy for the future. The CDPPE oversees the Council of Europe’s programmes in the field of education and advises the Committee of Ministers on education issues. IAU was also invited on board the special Education Task Force to advise the Council of Europe Secretariat on the development of a strategy for higher education in response to the COVID-19 crisis. An initial meeting was held on 26 June.

Education in a post-COVID world: Nine ideas for public action
|

In 2019, UNESCO launched the 'Futures of Education: Learning to become' initiative with the aim of rethinking education and reimagining how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet.
IAU sits on the Advisory Committee of the International Commission on the Futures of Education. The commission met in June and published a report presenting nine ideas for concrete actions today that will advance education tomorrow. “COVID-19 has the potential to radically reshape our world, but we must not passively sit back and observe what plays out,” says Ethiopian President H.E., Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde, Chair of the International Commission on the Futures of Education.

IAU joins ERIC-NARIC 27th annual meeting
|

The 27th annual ERIC-NARIC meeting took place virtually and dealt with the impact of COVID-19 on academic recognition. IAU Deputy Secretary General, Andreas Corcoran, took part in the event and gave an overview of the key issues HEI Leaders globally are facing in the context of COVID-19 such as higher education finances, the shift to online education and the effects of the pandemic on internationalization. He also presented some key results from the IAU Global Survey on the Impact of COVID-19 and underlined the importance of the Global WHED ID in supporting academic recognition and quality assurance worldwide.

IAU takes part in British Council Going Global 2020 vitrual event

IAU Secretary General, Dr. Hilligje van't Land, took part in the discussions on Reaching Sustainable Development Goals:
universities and students looking for solutions during a webinar co-organized by the British Council, an IAU partner, as part of the virtual Going Global 2020 event in June. This event was an opportunity for IAU Secretary General to reinforce the role of global advocacy as a key driver of IAU value-based education policy and to underline the importance of IAU's work with the IAU HESD Global Cluster leaders to ensure that higher education is recognised as a key stakeholder to meet the Agenda 2030 for Sustainabe Development.

CIMEA and IAU will collaborate to facilitate global recognition of higher education credentials
|
| |
IAU and CIMEA share a strong interest in facilitating the recognition of higher education qualifications and credentials globally and thereby support academic mobility. Both organisations will thus collaborate on a pilot project to integrate the Global WHED ID in the diplo me app (developed by CIMEA). The diplo me app aims to make it easier for students, graduates and professionals to enroll in a foreign university or the labour market in a foreign country. More information on this project will be shared later this year.

Finalists of the Campus 2030 Challenge revealead

The Campus 2030 Challenge, co-organized by IAU Member, AUF, in partnership with UNESCO, was launched in the context of the UN Day on 24 October 2019, for students and teachers to imagine the university campuses that will welcome and educate future generations. This initiative was an opportunity to promote the contribution of higher education towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN 2030 Agenda.
IAU is pleased to announce that IAU Member, University of Campinas in Brazil, is listed amongst the finalists.

Online learning provision is a key strategic response to COVID-19
|

According to U-Multirank’s latest report, data reveals that nearly 60% of universities reported online learning provisions in their strategic planning prior to COVID-19, while only one third appeared to provide full online courses. Although a majority of universities realized the strategic relevance of online teaching, only a few were prepared to switch completely to this method. "Universities all over the world appear to be caught by surprise by the COVID-19 crisis. Only few institutions appear to have had a risk management strategy in place that would allow them to respond to a pandemic" said Frank Ziegele, joint project-leader, U-Multirank.

2nd Global Survey report on HESD - Executive Summary in French and Spanish

This year, IAU released its 2nd Global Survey report on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Developement (HESD). The executive Summary is now available in French and Spanish.
The survey report shows the important role that universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) play in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations and where issues still exist. It is also a proof of the commitment and responsibilities of many HEIs globally towards the 2030 Agenda.

How to strengthen internationalisation post-COVID-19
|

In this article from University World News, Dr John K. Hudzik, chair of the NAFSA (IAU Member) Senior Fellows for Internationalization, stresses the importance for higher education leaders to take action now and integrate internationalization activity into core teaching, research and scholarship, as well as community engagement, in order to foster long-term strenghtening of internationalization within HEIs.
