Word from the Coordinator
Dear Reader,
The last few months have been marked by an unexpected experience of a magnitude never before known in the history of humanity. The coronavirus pandemic and the resulting standards of lockdown behaviour have shaken up the operating methods we had known until recently.

For the INSIDER project, all the experimental phases conducted in European partner laboratories have undergone a major impact as they
have had to interrupt all their analytical activities. The deadlines for the delivery of the results, their statistical processing and their written synthesis are therefore delayed by several months. This pandemic outbreak has also led to the stopping of transport and the postponement of many training courses as well as scientific events.
All these delays will have an impact on the final drafting of the methodological guides.

A new and updated project planning, described in a specific amendment, will thus be submitted to ask for an extension of the project duration for several months, but before the end of 2021.

Nevertheless, this delay will allow us to associate the final workshop of the project with the international conference DEM 2021, as one of its side events. This workshop will be held in Avignon (France) on the 10th of June, just one day after the conference. In agreement with the members of the End-User Group (EUG), a change of focus towards the circular economy is currently being discussed.

I hope that you will enjoy this third newsletter, and will not hesitate to get in touch with us, either through our website, or Twitter and LinkedIn.

Mapping of standards directly linked to INSIDER
In Work Package 7 - Dissemination & Exploitation, LNE collaborated with AFNOR to establish a mapping of standards directly linked to INSIDER’s topics. It is the first step to then establishing common methodologies to deploy reference guidelines in the framework of decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear facilities.
Second on-site benchmarking exercise
The INSIDER project is developing a validation method of the radiological characterisation for the nuclear installations under decommissioning and dismantling (D&D) process. During the 2019 Autmn, a second on-site benchmarking exercise was carried out at the JRC site of Ispra (Italy).

SHARE workshop:
presentation of INSIDER results
From 22 to 23 October, the SHARE project invited other EU initiatives in the field of characterisation and treatment of waste at its meeting consortium, among them the INSIDER project. During this two-days event, INSIDER was presented in terms of characterisation approach as a potential contribution to the SHARE synthesis of international developments and guides.
EPJ-N special edition devoted to INSIDER
The European Physical Journal Nuclear (EPJ-N) published in March 2020 a series of 7 scientific papers written by INSIDER partners. Publications covered the first results of the research carried out in the project and focused on “Step change innovation in radiological characterisation” that has been highlighted during the INSIDER mid-term workshop (Bilbao, 20-22 May 2019).

INSIDER Knowledge Platform is online!
As one of the INSIDER partners, the Joint Research Centre (JRC Science Hub) set up an INSIDER Knowledge Platform to foster learning exchange in the field of decommissioning and radioactive waste management of nuclear facilities and restoring sites. Experts and young generations of researchers will access here knowledge generated through past and ongoing R&D projects across the EU.

Have a look at the latest INSIDER public reports!
Despite the delays due to the covid crisis and lockdown measures, INSIDER partners published lately public reports outlining their latest research activities and outputs. They can directly be consulted on the official project's website.
