Cheryl Molnar, Town of the Future #1, 2020, archival photo and gouache collage on paper
18 x 20in. (46 x 51cm)
Cheryl Molnar’s art is an homage to the strange ways memories can imprint themselves on our consciousness. Places we have lived or visited appear to us as fleeting images, sometimes blended together in surreal landscapes containing disparate, juxtaposed elements. In dreams or fantasies, these combinations come to life, and we may find ourselves wandering or running through environments that are at once many things — neighborhoods, schools, malls, amusement parks…
As many of us are deprived of easy access to dreamy vistas on a good day, during these days of widespread isolation, we offer images of Molnar’s work as an opportunity to lift us out of our confined spaces, to extend our vision into the more limitless dimensions of imagination. We hope her work will both help and inspire you to revisit your past and re-envision your future, a potential being offered to all of us by these extreme times.
In this spirit, we also share some images from one of Cheryl’s past projects, a large-scale mural installed in a public school in Queens, NY in 2018 commemorating the nearby setting of the 1964 World’s Fair. Ironically, this work is located in the Queens neighborhood of Corona, a reminder that we can still find beauty in unexpected places, despite our profoundly challenging circumstances.
