Welcome to GeoNews August...
Dear  ,
This month we feature two of our recently endorsed virtual training courses: “Exploration and Evaluation of Geological Resources – Tools and Methods” proposed by our Portuguese member association APG starting from 21 September and “Mineral Exploration via Satellite Remote Sensing” which will be presented by EurGeol. Dr Arda Arcasoy in the framework of the Meggen Raw Materials Days on 18 September. We also invite you to discover the latest EFGeoBlog post by Alicia González (IGME) on how to successfully communicate science. Last but not least Maria Tzima, the coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Education is introducing her vision for the Panel in our interview series. Enjoy the reading!

EFG Panels of Experts: Interview with Maria Tzima
EFG’s Panels of Experts have been set up to provide high-quality advice and information to the European institutions, to international NGO’s and to other global professional associations. EFG currently has 10 Panels active in the fields of CCS, Education, Geological Heritage, Geotechnics, Geothermal Energy, Hydrogeology, Natural Hazards, Minerals, Oil & Gas and Soil Protection. The Panels involve more than 200 voluntary experts from over 20 different countries and all aim at emphasising the importance of geology to society, the benefits of incorporating geological advice and to promote the importance of the geoscientific profession. EFG is presenting the Panels' coordinators in an interview series. In August, we have talked to Maria Tzima, the coordinator of the Panel on Education. | Read more

GUIDE Portal: Finding the geoscience programme that suits you best
As part of the INTERMIN project, the Professional Association of German Geoscientists (BDG) in collaboration with the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) have developed the GUIDE portal.
GUIDE is a free tool for students to compare international courses in the field of geosciences. The platform provides detailed information about the curricula of the available bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes at universities in Europe and beyond. The tool aims to increase the transparency among the European geoscience’s university degrees, the student mobility in Europe and, the number of geoscience students and graduates.
Would you like to include a geoscience bachelor’s or master’s degree programme in the GUIDE database? Please find more information on how to create an account to provide information about the programme offered at your university here:
Crowdthermal: Lessons learnt from renewable energy projects
Over the past few weeks, the Crowdthermal project which is coordinated by EFG has presented various examples from different renewable energy sectors where alternative financing models have been chosen. To sum up the campaign, we invite you to discover our lessons learnt for the development of the CROWDTHERMAL approach. | Read more
INFACT: The airborne hyperspectral campaign at the Spanish reference sites
In August, a fixed-wing aircraft carrying hyperspectral cameras and LiDAR sensors flew over Rio Tinto, Las Cruces and Aznalcóllar areas, at the project’s Spanish reference site. The equipment covered the near to shortwave infrared and longwave infrared range. On the ground, partners from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) contributed collecting spectral measurements in the VNIR/SWIR and LWIR on known lithologies, water bodies and vegetation as well as taking temperature measurements during the flights. | Read more

2020 Mining Industry Survey: State of Play
State of Play is an independent research institute focused on strategy and innovation in the global mining industry. The institute’s biennial Mining Industry Survey has become the world’s largest mining industry survey. EFG supports this initiative and invites you to complete the 2020 edition of the survey which will provide insight into the changing global mining ecosystem and its effect on innovation. Completing the survey will take you approximately 15 minutes. Building on data gathered in previous years, the 2020 survey responses will be used to produce a report that takes an in-depth look at key industry drivers, strategic responses and innovation activity. You can access the survey here.
