GATE is looking for young talents
Driven by the ambition to attract young researchers who have completed their education outside Bulgaria, this year the GATE Institute is part of Tuk-Tam Kosher, an inspiring event for professional opportunities, meeting with new technologies, ideas and people who implement them.
GATE participates in the event with a virtual stand, where those interested will have the opportunity to "meet" with leading researchers from the Institute and get first-hand information on its main research and application areas, as well as on current projects.

The forum will be held on September 17, 2020 from 10.00 to 17.00 at the Inter Expo Center. The virtual stand of GATE will be open all day long here. We can be found also in the programme of Hot Hive, where from 11.10 am the director, Prof. Silvia Ilieva will present live the Institute. Visit GATE at Tuk-Tam Kosher!
GATE participates in Biotech Atelier 2020 with a satellite event
GATE’s virtual workshop Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Digital Health that will be held on 25th September 2020 as a satellite event to Biotech Atelier 2020, will explore some of the latest developments in this field. The workshop is organised in two sessions: „Big Data in Genetics“ (9.00 – 10.30 h) and „AI for cognitive diseases“ (11.00-12.30 h).
The organizers from the GATE Institute and Biotech Atelier will bring scientists from leading academic and medical institutions from Bulgaria, Sweden and the United States.
GATE achieves remarkable results in its first year
GATE is one year old now. Its goals have been achieved and some even exceeded.
The Institute has put in place its polices and operational procedures, has defined its research and innovation strategy, has increased research excellence, attractiveness and reputation of Sofia University.
GATE celebrates its first anniversary with staff expansion
Ten young researchers joined the GATE team at its first anniversary.
At a special meeting with them, the director of the GATE Institute, Prof. Silvia Ilieva presented the goals of the Institute, its research and application areas, as well as the system of values ​​that are expected to be shared by all employees.
Sofia University to strengthen relationship with DeepMind through scholarship programme
Two DeepMind graduate scholarships for students wishing to pursue a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and Information Extraction and Knowledge Discovery at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FMI) of Sofia University will be made available for students in the academic year 2020/2021. These scholarships aim to attract talented Bulgarian students from groups that are currently underrepresented in AI, specifically those identified as female or from a low-income background.
GATE signes a cooperation agreement with Sofia Municipality
The GATE Institute and Sofia Municipality will join efforts to build new models of interaction between higher education and municipal administration, according to a recent co-operation agreement between the two institutions. Initially, the cooperation is focused on data exchange and the construction of the GATE’s City Living Lab, and in the future it will expand with new areas of common interest.
GATE was a guest of the bTV programme "Before lunch"
Prof. Silvia Ilieva and Assoc. Prof. Dessislava Petrova-Antonova were guests in the studio of the bTV programme "Before lunch", where they talked about the GATE Institute and its first pilot project “City Digital Twin”. Prof. Silvia Ilieva shared how the young people would be involved as researchers at GATE Institute, working on societal challenges in Future Cities, Intelligent Government, Digital Health and Smart Industry application areas. Assoc. Prof. Dessislava Petrova-Antonova reflected on “City Digital Twin” by showing how it could be applied to optimize the city processes and improve the citizens’ quality of life.
GATE participates in a Career development forum
GATE took part in the forum for career development of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FMI) of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski ”, which took place in the period 23 - 25 June 2020. The team of the institute organized a virtual event and a stand in the park in front of the FMI building. The participants in the virtual event got acquainted with the projects being developed by the institute and met with the researchers working on them. The opportunities for career development offered by the Institute and its internship program, in particular, attracted many young people to the GATE's stand.
Virtual Project Management Board meeting
The second Project Management Board meeting was held on 28th of May. The meeting was organized as a virtual session, in which the partners of GATE were represented. Despite of the unusual situation, Gate team performed well and completed most of the planned work with some deviations.
GATE CoE IP processes
A very useful webinar was held on 28th of May, in which Akeksandra Kempinska of Chalmers Industriteknik presented their knowhow on Business processes organization. The special focus was the Intellectual Assets and IP management to be formalized in GATE. Aleksandra is passionate about mixing science with innovative business.
GATE Institute creates a platform for research and analysis of the economy during and after the COVID-19 pandemic
The “Big Data for Smart Society” – GATE Institute, created the first-of-its-kind platform (COVID-19 Activity Tracker (CAT)), which processes and presents empirical information about individual industries and the economy as a whole, based on constraints, imposed on the human factor.

The European Big Data Value Forum
The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the flagship event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community organized by the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT).
