Spotlight on COVID-19 and Equity in Education
According to Malala Fund’s latest report, the COVID-19 pandemic will have a lasting impact on marginalized girls around the world. The report builds on insights from the Ebola pandemic in 2014-2015 and the 2008 global financial crisis to estimate the short- and long-term consequences of COVID-19 for girls. The report also recommends ways of mitigating the impact of the pandemic.
The economic impacts of COVID-19 are expected to be widespread and devastating, especially for over 111 million girls living in the world’s least developed countries. Many girls in the Global South will face barriers preventing them from going back to school once the crisis subsides. The consequences of COVID-19 could reverse 20 years of gains in girls’ education.
The Human Rights Watch released a report that highlights potentially far-reaching impacts of COVID-19 on children around the world. Job and income losses can lead to increased rates of child labour, sexual exploitation, abuse, teenage pregnancy, and child marriage. “Governments need to act urgently to protect children during the pandemic, but also to consider how their decisions now will best uphold children’s rights after the crisis ends.”
According to UNESCO estimates, nationwide school closures have been implemented in 138 countries and have impacted over 1.3 billion children and youth. School closures will exacerbate existing social and economic disparities, impacting students who are already vulnerable and marginalized. This article offers three ways of ensuring equity for all.

COVID-19 amplifies inequities already present in education systems around the world. Insights from the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) suggest that there is much that educators and education systems can do to mitigate the impact of this pandemic on schools, families, and students, including those in the most marginalized groups.
Quality Education For All During Covid-19 is a report and an accompanying website that highlight opportunities and challenges for education brought about by COVID-19. Developed by HundrED in partnership with OECD, the report includes a collection of 30 solutions for parents, students, and teachers that can help them navigate learning during the pandemic.
An innovative chatbot introduced by UNICEF in 2011 as a youth engagement platform is playing a key role in educating youth about COVID-19. The tool facilitates the exchange of information for millions of young people across 42 countries. It is available via SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Viber. “What we want is free flow of correct information that empowers reason and changes behavior. So we are enlisting our young people in the fight against the epidemic by empowering you with information, so that you can use that information in your household, to have your household change behavior.”
