This is an unprecedented time in our history. As we all begin to adapt to this 'new normal', it's more important than ever for us to keep in regular contact with our organisations.
Volunteering Barnet is working hard alongside partners and the Council to create a command centre to support the most vulnerable members of the community. We will inform you when this comes into effect. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any urgent requests for volunteers as we are receiving a lot of interest.
As our team continues to work from home, the best way to reach us is by:
If you want to speak to us on the phone, please email and request a phone call.
Guide for Volunteers
If you have volunteers who are furloughed for the time being and want to volunteer during the current health situation, please direct them to speak to us. We have many opportunities through which they can volunteer, including for those who are self-isolating and can't leave their homes.
Best Practise
Please check in with your regular volunteers whenever possible. If they want to continue volunteering, encourage them to carry out tasks at home if they are confident with IT and have the means to do so.
This could include:
  • Write about being a volunteer and encouraging others to volunteer
  • Come up with ideas for future fundraisers, trips, activities etc when the current social interaction guidelines end.
  • Write thank you cards (obeying hygiene precautions) for funders or people volunteering now.
  • Creating social media and website content
  • Delivering telephone advice sessions to service users (if applicable)
  • Creating wellness resource banks
  • Or even finding and sharing positive, interesting stories.
Organisation Advice Session
We are still able to arrange for virtual Organisational Advice Sessions. This is a great opportunity to discuss best practice, guidelines and support with your volunteering needs.
Please drop us an email requesting for a session and we will arrange for a phone or video call with you.
Digital Training
Safe (a safeguarding group) is offering a cost-effective safeguarding course. It's perfect for people responding to the Coronavirus health situation, so share with anyone you know who'll benefit from this. Find the online training course here.
MakeitClick offers online training including basic IT and digital sessions. This may be useful for your organisation or any volunteers who would like to further build their digital skills. Search the full list of training.
Grants and Funding

Other funding available for organisations facing financial pressures or working to develop new services to respond to the coronavirus situation:

  • Indigo Trust: £2.5m available through emergency grants to help charities
  • Tech Force 19: Government funding up to £25K for innovators who can support the elderly, vulnerable and self-isolating during COVID-19
  • Innovation Fund: The Innovation Fund provides funding for innovative ways of delivering more affordable homes in London including community-led housing
Feel Good Vibes
As the news is rather inundated with negative stories at the minute, we want to use this space to celebrate positive things that are going on.
Tell us what your organisation is up to. Have you got any stories about your outstanding volunteers? Any new initiatives that have come into effect during this time that are worth celebrating? Send them our way and we can feature them in next week's newsletter.
For now, check out these rainbows children have been creating and displaying on windows across the UK.
Important notice about your volunteer roles:

If you are currently recruiting for volunteers for when the current precautions end, we recommend that you change your role description to reflect this.

If you are recruiting directly for volunteers to support people affected by the current coronavirus situation, please make this clear on the role description. We will promote these roles especially as we know that many of your regular volunteers will not be able to come in.
All our services are active and operating as usual. If you need any support or information, reach us between 10am - 4pm, from Monday to Friday.
