The Impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education around the World: IAU Survey Report
 
The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented health and socio-economic crisis which will mark our times for long and that has severely impacted the entire higher education sector around the world. In response to this global crisis, IAU has undertaken various initiatives to support and inform its Members and the higher education community at large. Amongst those, IAU conducted a study on the immediate and potential long-term impact and consequences of COVID-19 on higher education worldwide. An online survey was conducted from 25 March to 17 April 2020 and collected replies from 424 higher education institutions in 111 countries and territories.
 
Almost all responding HEIs declared that they have been impacted one way or another by the COVID-19 crisis. The report presents a general assesment of the situation in universities globally and explores different aspects of the impact of COVID-19, such as: teaching & learning, research, community engagement and other key challenges and opportunitiesThe results of the survey were analysed at regional (Africa, Americas, Asia & Pacific, Europe) and global level
 
IAU 16th General Conference: new dates - same place!
 
Considering the challenges emerging from the current situation worldwide due to COVID-19, IAU has taken the decision to postpone its General Conference - initially planned for 3-6 November 2020 - to 26-29 October 2021. It will be hosted by IAU Member, University College Dublin in Ireland.
The Conference will focus on Relevance and Value of Universities to Future Society . The Conference website will be launched early next year.

The next session will be hosted on 9 June - 15:30 - 17:00 (CEST). Results of the 1st IAU Global Survey on the impact of COVID-19 on higher education will be presented by Giorgio Marinoni, IAU Manager, HE & Internationalization. Respondents are: Hans de Wit, Director, Center for International Higher Education, Boston College; Michael Gaebel, Higher Education Policy Director, European University Association; and Marta Losada, Dean of Science, New York University Abu Dhabi.

IAU signs agreement with UNESCO IESALC to boost the use of research evidence in higher education policymaking
 
IAU works closely with partners around the world to address the pressing challenges of our time.
UNESCO IESALC and IAU will collaborate through a series of joint activities in particular in Latin America and the Caribbean to enhance quality and equity in higher education. They will cooperate on the publication of regional reports drawing on IAU’s global survey results and thus disseminating the available evidence in critical areas such as the contribution of HE to the Sustainable Development Goals, the digitalization of HE, the internationalization of higher education, and the impact of COVID-19 on higher education, among others.

IAU Horizons: call for papers
 
The next ‘In Focus’ section of the IAU magazine - IAU Horizons - will be devoted to “Imagining higher education in a post pandemic world” to include considerations and thoughts about how the current crisis will impact the future of higher education around the world beyond the pandemic.
Please send expressions of interest to contribute a paper by 6 July indicating what topic you would like to cover as well as a few lines about the scope of the article. Deadline for the submission of articles (max. 800 words): 15 August.

International Green Gown Awards: Finalists announced
 
The International Green Gown Awards, supported by IAU, UN Environment, ACU, and AUF recognize exceptional sustainability initiatives at universities around the world in three categories: Sustainability Institution of the Year, Benefitting Society and Student Engagement.
IAU supports this initiative and took an active part in the evaluation committee. The Green Gown Awards finalists have now been revealed
The Green Gown Award winners will be announced at the Virtual Awards Ceremony on 8th July 2020 as part of the United Nations High Level Political Forum in which IAU will take part as well.
Global perspectives for higher education internationalization - a video series by FAUBAI
 
The Brazilian Association for International Education (FAUBAI) launched the initiative TOMORROW: Global Perspectives for Higher Education Internationalization to commemorate the FAUBAI 2020 Conference dates (27-29 April) which had to be cancelled due to the current pandemic.
Hans de Wit and Eva Egron-Polak, two IAU Senior Fellows, as well as IAU Secretary General, Hilligje van't Land and Giorgio Marinoni, IAU Manager, HE & Internationalization, were invited to speak and share their perspectives on the challenges for the internationalization of Higher Education worlwide. Financial Impact of COVID-19 in Higher Education in the U.S.
 
The Association of International Educators (NAFSA), an IAU Member, conducted a survey on the financial impact of COVID-19 on higher education institutions in the USA. The survey focused specifically on the following areas of higher education: education abroad, international students, and scholar programs and services. The results of the survey confirm that COVID-19 will continue to have both short- and long-term impacts on international higher education.
