Dear Members of the International Association of Universities (IAU)
Dear Members of the higher education community,
During this time of health crisis and unprecedented lock-down of universities across the different continents, we wish to express our support to you and to the entire academic community. It is a time that reminds us to what extent we are all connected and to what extent we must stand together to respond to the global challenges of our time.
Leaders of the universities and academic staff around the world are working tremendously hard to lessen the disruption of learning and research and to ensure that their universities continue to carry out operations despite the lock-down measures. This requires fast responses, innovative thinking and teamwork.
In anticipation of the COVID-19 pandemic easing over the coming months and international travel restrictions lifting, we are continuing to plan for the IAU 16th General Conference, which is scheduled to take place from 3 to 6 November 2020 at University College Dublin (UCD), in Ireland. Should it become necessary to postpone the conference, we will let you know. We are planning for a very timely and stimulating event.
However, in light of the current situation, we are fully aware that your priorities may not include planning for the end of the year, but rather to cope with the crisis that all experience today. Thus, for now, we ask you to save the dates of the IAU Conference in your calendar and, at an appropriate time, we will get back to you with an official invitation and all the information that you will need in order to start planning to take an active part in this event.
We very much look forward to unite in solidarity as leaders of universities and other higher education institutions around the world to debate the relevance and value of universities to society, also to consider the COVID19 pandemic and to analyse its repercussions on the higher education sector.
Beyond the thematic part of the conference, IAU General Conferences are also the decision-making body of the Association. They take place every four years, elect the new IAU President and Members of the IAU Administrative Board and adopt the new strategic plan for the next four years. It is your chance to get even more actively engaged with your Association. Please do get in touch with us to receive further information on Board engagement (contact: n.poulton@iau-aiu.net).
We wish you and the entire community all the best during these disruptive times and look forward to learning from this experience and exchange across borders when we meet in Dublin, also to celebrate 70 years of international collaboration.
Sincerely Yours,
Pam Fredman Andrew Deeks Hilligje van ‘t Land

IAU celebrates 70 years of International Collaboration
|
| |
IAU collects short essays to celebrate its 70th anniversary! The essays will be published in a Celbratory Book to be launched at the 16th General Conference, in November 2020. The 70 essays to be selected will focus on relevant higher education themes and challenges; point to key societal issues to which higher education contributes; and look at higher education transformation over time and around the world. Papers may revisit the past, analyse the present, or boldly look into the future.
If you wish to be part of this project, please submit an abstract by 10 April 2020.

IAU HESD Global Cluster: New Lead for SDG4
|
| |
The IAU Global Cluster on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) advocates for the key role that HEIs play in achieving the UN Agenda 2030. This global endeavor engages universities in addressing all 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). The IAU HESD Cluster consists of 16 leads from HEIs globally, one for each SDG; IAU leads the work on SDG 17 - Global Partnerships. The lead universities work with ‘satellite’ institutions on concrete projects to advance a particular SDG, all the while ensuring synergies among all goals.
We are pleased to announce that IAU Member, York University, Toronto, Canada, has taken over the function as Lead institution for the Cluster work on SDG 4: Quality Education.

| |
In the current context of Covid-19 pandemic, the future of education is now. The UNESCO Futures of Education initiative is thus particularly relevant as it aims to rethink education and shape the future of humanity. The UNESCO Futures of Education initiative was launched in September 2019 with the intent to open broad global consultations, foster co-creation, catalyze collective intelligence and generate global and inclusive debates on various education-related themes.
IAU sits on the Advisory Board and was pleased to take part in the first global virtual Meeting in March. Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, IAU Secretary General, reminded participants that “values need to underpin the education we want.”

Post pandemic outlook for HE is bleakest for the poorest
|
| |
"In the midst of crisis, with the scope and outcomes largely unclear, it is too early to accurately predict the broader implications of the coronavirus pandemic for higher education or for society in general. [...] We think that, broadly, global higher education will remain fundamentally stable. But significant short-, medium- and perhaps long-term consequences and disruptions are inevitable – and becoming increasingly serious as the crisis continues."
