The new edition of IAU's International Handbook of Universities is out!
 
The International Handbook of Universities (IHU) was first published in 1959 in response to the growing demand for authoritative information about Higher Education Institutions. 
 
IAU is pleased to announce the publication of the 29th edition of the IHU describing national higher education systems in 196 countries and listing more than 18,400 acccredited higher education institutions (HEIs) that offer 4-year degrees or a 4-year professional diplomas.

The information available in the IHU is drawn from the IAU World Higher Education Database 
(WHED), the reference online portal maintained, developed and continuously updated in collaboration with UNESCO. This global information resource lists all of accredited HEIs globally and aims to increase transparency in the higher education landscape. It now also includes a unique feature: the IAU Global WHED ID, a permanent code that identifies each accredited HEI in the world, enhancing their recognition globally.

IAU at the French Rectors' Conference
 
On 16 January, IAU Secretary General Hilligje van't Land, and IAU Manager for Internationalization Giorgio Marinoni, presented the outcomes of the IAU 5th Global Survey on Internationalization of Higher Education, the most geographically comprehensive collection and analysis of primary data on internationalization of higher education. They shared knowledge of crucial aspects of internationalization such as the main external drivers for this process, the risk of inequalities, the major obstacles identified, the importance of collaboration and possibilities for development.

Toyo University shares its experience of
ISAS (2.0)
 
On January 28, IAU, in collaboration with Toyo University and the Centre for International Higher Education (Boston College) held a free webinar on IAU’s internationalization strategy advisory service ISAS (2.0). Speakers presented the internal process that led to a critical self-analysis of Toyo University’s current internationalization activities, as well as the ways in which ISAS 2.0 encouraged progress towards the goals set in Toyo’s strategy.

IAU HESD global survey 2019 released
 
IAU releases its 2nd Global Survey Report on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development. The study was conducted in June and July 2019. It shows the important role that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and where issues still exist. It is also proof of the commitment and responsibilities of many Higher Education Institutions globally towards the 2030 Agenda.

UNODC International Day of Education
 
IAU's Secretary General, Hilligje Van't Land, was invited to the UNODC conference in Vienna to celebrate the International Education Day on 24 January and speak about the importance of higher education for peace and justice in the world. The objective of this event was to brief Member States, representatives from Civil Society and academia on the efforts undertaken by UNODC and its partners like IAU to support the SDGs achievement by 2030.
 
The newly signed partnership between UNODC - E4J and the International Association of Universities will help support the promotion of rule of law related educational material at universities thereby assisting the achievement of the SDGs.
Wilton Park Conference: Global engagement to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals 2030
 
Wilton Park's conference was held on 27-29 January in West Sussex, UK. It explored the ways in which the higher education sector can actively engage with the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals, bringing together those who are leading the strategies of Universities and their international outreach, together with academic and other experts on the SDGs.
IAU Secretary General, Dr. Hilligje Van't Land spoke about the critical role of higher education institutions towards the achievement of the SDGs and more specifically regarding SDG 13 (Climate Change) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). She also mentionned the importance of the role of Associations like ACU, AUF and IAU in this process. 
UNESCO and the International Day of Education
 
UNESCO invited partners around the world on 24 January to celebrate the International Day of Education based on the 2020 theme ‘Learning for people, planet, prosperity and peace ’.​
The 2020 celebration of World Education Day positioned education and the learning it enables as humanity’s greatest renewable resource and reaffirm the role of education as a fundamental right, a public good and an enabler of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 
IAU's Higher Education and Internationalization Manager, Giorgio Marinoni, attended the conference at UNESCO headquarter.
 
 
IAU's Report on Technology in Higher Education
 
Higher Education in the Digital Era: The Current State of Transformation Around the World reports on a large consultation undertaken by IAU in order to collect global views on the current state of play of higher education's digital transformation. It brings together experiences from different parts of the world, discussing the current landscape and ways to jointly leverage the potential of technological developments for a sustainable future.

Higher Education Policy on the rise!
 
IAU is delighted to announce that the 2018 Impact Factor has increased to 1.333 for Higher Education Policy! Discover the latest edition of our quarterly international peer-reviewed journal for advancing scholarly understanding of the higher education policy process. This issue compiles papers covering a variety of issues of importance to the global higher education community, from K-12 assessment that could have implications for postsecondary testing, ethics and fairness in assessment, the evaluation mechanisms being developed in China, or initiatives to improve learning quality via assessment in the US, measuring teacher competence.
