December 2019 edition of the SNETP newsletter.
Newsletter n°20 - December 2019
The year 2019 was busy with the finalisation of the formal transition of the SNETP to an international association (AISBL) which was successfully achieved. Details regarding the transition period, on-going formalities and transition steps in terms of financial management, collaborative tools, roadmapping etc. will be given to the member organisation representatives at the upcoming SNETP AISBL General Assembly taking place on 26 March 2020 in Brussels.

In parallel, several technical, strategic and outreach activities have been conducted by the different SNETP teams:
  • The update of the SNETP Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda is ongoing.
  • The three SNETP pillars conducted their usual project creation process before the last Euratom call deadline.
  • The SNETP Secretariat and the SNETP Scientific Committee are involved in the organisation of large events, NDE in Nuclear 2021 and the SNETP Forum 2020.
  • Efforts are also done to optimise the daily management of the SNETP as a legal entity and organise efficiently the new governing, technical and support bodies.

A lot of actions linked to the “transition period” were launched in 2019 and we hope to conclude most of them in the first half of 2020.
Keep in mind the requirements for candidates to the new SNETP Governing Board and Presidency election taking place on 26 March 2020 during the SNETP General Assembly.
Save the date for the annual SNETP Forum to be held on 22-24 April 2020 in Rome.
Feel free to contact us to share any idea you may have for SNETP services or with any other comment or suggestion regarding the daily operations of the Association that can be discussed in the upcoming strategic and technical meetings early in 2020.
Your active involvement is very much needed to run the association and its pillars but also for us to support your activities and solve your issues.

Nuclear session during the 13th SET Plan Conference in Helsinki
The Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) provides the essential framework to coordinate and align EU instruments with private sector engagements and national funding programmes.
Participants gathered in Helsinki on the 14th and 15th of November 2019 for the 13th SET-Plan conference to discuss how to collectively accelerate the clean energy transition in the European Union.
Satu Helynen (VTT) and Abderrahim Al-Mazouzi (EDF) were representing SNETP during the SET Plan conference. The session "Nuclear Innovation for a Clean Energy Future" focused on nuclear innovations highlighting in particular the Small Modular Reactors (SMR). Both the Panelists and the audience pointed out several times the competitiveness of future nuclear energy in the context of carbon price increase. SMRs can have an important role in the nuclear future but they seem to be available only in the 2030s, at the earliest. The legislation will have to adapt to this new type of reactor. Public acceptance of Nuclear remains an important question. According to the panel, the message on the sustainability of nuclear has to be constantly repeated and communicated in a comprehensive way.
The European parliament has adopted a resolution on the 2019 UN climate change conference (COP25) in Madrid that recognises the role nuclear energy can play in meeting climate objectives as a zero-greenhouse gas emissions source. More information HERE.

International Seminar: "In-vessel retention: outcomes of IVMR project"
  • 21-22 January 2020
  • Juan les Pins, France
The first objective of this seminar is to present the main outcomes of the European project IVMR (2015-2019) and to draw conclusions from that project. Among the main issues, the impact of transient evolutions of oxide and metal layers on the focusing effect and the issue of the long term mechanical behaviour of the ablated vessel wall will be discussed in details. Issues about external cooling efficiency, innovations and back fitting will also be addressed.
A second objective is to bring together an international panel of actors involved in severe accident management issues, either from the regulatory side or from research or industry, in order to share knowledge and views about the IVR strategy. Through panel discussions and technical sessions, all the important issues of the IVR strategy will be covered and discussed. The technical sessions will also include presentations from experts out of the IVMR project, in order to give the widest overview as possible on the IVR topic.
