Virginia Team Update
A message from the District Superintendent …

As a young pastor I learned from three veteran pastors. This morning each of them came to mind for their simple, yet brilliant, insight expressed in these three simple statements:

#1 -- “God is bigger than whatever’s the matter.” I’m not sure the phrase is grammatically correct, yet the sentiment is true. God is love. God is holy love. There is nothing bigger than that. The apostle Paul said it more eloquently:

   35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[j]
   37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k]neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39 NIV)

#2 – “And another thing, Lord …” Every prayer my mentor prayed started out the same way, with the same phrase, every time … “And another thing, Lord …” His communication with the Father was a constant stream of give and take. His communication with Jesus so frequent that he simply added to the list with the next thought and phrase. Because of him I better understand the idea of, “pray continually” (1 Thess 5:17 NIV).

#3 – “Jesus goes First Class.” – My pastor friend Harold LOVED this saying. What he meant is this: If I am going to do something for Jesus, then I am going to give it my best effort, my best intention, my best talent and my best generosity. I’m not going to let Jesus have anything less than First Class place in my life. No economy seating for Jesus. No left-over energies. No tithing only if it is convenient. No serving only when I’m happy about it. No cutting corners for Jesus. “Jesus goes First Class!”

In this season when much of the world is filled with anxiety and fear, our hope-filled lives can be lived as a showcase, a witness, if you will, that “God is bigger than whatever is the matter” by our peace-filled living and our prayer life. Let’s continue to be in such sweet conversation with Jesus, especially during times like these, that we could start our every sentence with, “And another thing Lord.” And finally, in a time when it would be easy to look out for self and to place Christ and his Church in second place priority, I hope we all affirm, “Jesus goes First Class!”
