Universities from all over the world will gather in Puebla, Mexico for the IAU 2019 International Conference
 
Hosted by Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico on 13-15 November, the IAU 2019 International Conference will be a platform for 250+ university leaders worldwide to find innovative ways of Transforming Higher Educaiton for the Future.
 
In light of the rapid societal transformations happening worldwide, the programme will cover major topics from the financing of higher education, to the impact of technology on teaching and learning, from the critical tension between global engagement and the local mission of universities, to the challenge of innovation for sustainable development.
 
The annual gathering of IAU Members and universities from all over the world will also see the launch of IAU AIMING HIGHER, the IAU-BBC Documentary Series spotlighting exciting university

Take part in the Campus 2030 Challenge
 
In the context of the UN Day on 24 October, the Campus 2030 Challenge was launched for students and teachers to imagine the university campuses that will welcome and educate future generations.
Help us promote the contribution of higher education to Agenda 2030 and achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals! IAU invites all its Members to share their vision for 2030 and submit their proposal for a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable campus.

Education 2035: A Dialogue with the Future of the World
 
On 17 October, Prof. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, President, Siam University, Thailand and IAU Vice-President, represented IAU at China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) 10th Anniversary Conference, dedicated to the theme Education 2035: A Dialogue with the Future of the World. Vice President Mongkhonvanit gave a keynote speech on Internationalization of Higher Education and Student Mobility: Integrate to Innovate where he had the opportunity to present the recent IAU 5th Global Survey Report on Internationalization of Higher Education.

Educating for the Rule of Law
 
Secretary General Dr. Hilligje van't Land represented IAU at the International High-Level Conference organized on 7-9 October 2019, in Vienna, Austria, by The Education for Justice (E4J), an initiative of the United Nations Offce on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which seeks to prevent crime and promote a culture of lawfulness through education activities designed for primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The Conference brought together 
over 200 stakeholders from both education and justice fields and allow policymakers, educators and academics to build bridges and propose innovative ways to empower the next generation of change makers. Dr. van't Land  was one of the panellists on the session on Making them work - Linking SDG 4 and SDG 16 to make the world safer from crime.

How do science, technology and innovation contribute to achieving Society 5.0 and SDGs?
 
On 2 October, Prof. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit, President, Siam University, Thailand and IAU Vice-President and IAU Secretary General Dr. Hilligje van't Land gave a speech on international collaboration and university partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals through social sciences at Tsukuba Conference 2019. The session debated various visions on how the humanities and social sciences make a major contribution to societal development.

MCO Conference gathered HE leaders in Canada
 
On 16-17 October, University leaders from around the world gathered for the Magna Charta Observatory annual Conference, hosted by an IAU Member institution, McMaster University, Canada. Pam Fredman, IAU President and Former Rector of the University of Gothenburg, and Eva Egron-Polak, IAU Senior Fellow and Former Secretary General attended this important event exploring questions of academic freedom and the social responsibilities of universities. President Fredman chaired a session on Value-based leadership for engaging with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More than 900 institutions globally are now signatories to the Magna Charta, which marked its 31st anniversary this year.
Collaborating with the Erasmus Student Network 
 
On 7 October, Giorgio Marinoni, IAU Manager for higher education Internationalization presented the results of the 5th IAU Global Survey to a delegation of representatives of national branches of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). The event was a unique opportunity to strengthen the collaboration between IAU and ESN, one of the biggest international student associations and an important partner for IAU.
Supporting RUDN's Internationalization strategy
 
On 2-4 October, an IAU Expert Panel visited RUDN University in Moscow, Russia, in the framework of an Internationalization Strategy Advisory ServiceChaired by Eva Egron-Polak, IAU Senior Fellow and former Secretary General and including Andrew Deeks, President, University College Dublin, Ireland, Elena Gorozhankina, Deputy director, Department of International affairs, Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Russia, Elena Gulicheva, Head, Department of International Relations, National Research University, Moscow Power Engineering Institute, Russia and Giorgio Marinoni, IAU Manager, Internationalization, the panel assessed RUDN's Comprehensive Internationalization strategy. If positively evaluated, RUDN will be awarded the IAU Comprehensive Internationalization learning badge.
 
 
Intelligent Internationalization: The Shape of Things to Come
 
In 2015, Laura Rumbley put forward the notion that higher education—in a highly complex, globally interdependent world—would be wise to commit to an agenda of "intelligent internationalization" (I2). I2 turns on the notion that "the development of a thoughtful alliance between the research, practitioner, and policy communities," in tandem with decision makers in leadership roles, is essential for systems and institutions of higher education seeking sustained relevance and vitality through their internationalization efforts. These issues are addressed in this book which builds on a 2018 Symposium on Intelligent Internationalization.

NEW MOOC: 
Higher Education for Sustainable Development Goals

 
 
Launched by the University of Bologna, an IAU Member institution, this new course is  completely online and free of charge to anyone interested in sustainability science and environmental and social commitment in general. The MOOC introduces the concept of Sustainable Development and the recent debate and policies promoted at the global level to face urgent environmental and societal challenges. 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the SDGs, aiming at addressing ambitious sustainability challenges by 2030, are presented across the course program. The course concludes with a call for action to accelerate and demonstrate the active commitment of the higher education community.

Report on the Ocean Sustainability Bergen Conference
 
The University of Bergen, Norway, the IAU Member institution leading the work of the IAU Cluster on Higher Education and Sustainable Development on SDG 14 - Life Below Water, organized the very first Ocean Sustainability Bergen Conference on 21-22 October. More than 150 scientists, students and ocean enthusiasts gathered for an event packed with research presentations, a historic look at the science-policy nexus in Bergen and how to strengthen science advice in the future. The University of Bergen is a brilliant example of a higher education institution taking leadership and key responsibilities in building a more sustainable society.
