November was a particularly stimulating month for IAU, as the Association welcomed around 300 participants in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to discuss Higher Education Partnerships for Societal Impact. Below we offer you just a glimpse, and invite you to visit the IAU 2018 International Conference website to learn more about the fascinating discussions that took place.

On 13-15 November IAU held a successful 2018 International Conference in cooperation with the University of Malaya. Higher Education scholars, researchers and experts from around the globe came together to discuss Higher Education Partnerships for Societal Impact. Specific sessions were dedicated to such pressing issues as digital transformation, sustainable development and community engagement. |

...that a new edition o IAU's Higher Education Policy* has just been released? It includes three papers on sustainable development as a new academic discipline, submitted to the last IAU/Palgrave Prize Essay competition, as well as articles on social engagement and intra-institutional research collaboration.
With this quarterly peer-reviewed journal IAU aims to advance scholarly understanding of the higher education policy process around the globe. You can find both theoretical and practice-based analyses,the focus of which may range from individual institutions to policy making at systems and at national level.

Sustainable Development |

On 15 November at the IAU 2018 International Conference, the Association officially launched the Global Cluster on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) to advocate for the key role that higher education institutions play in achieving Agenda 2030. Internationalization |

On 31 October IAU closed the 5th edition of its Global Survey on Internationalization. We have received 986 full responses from 907 institutions in 126 countries and will soon start releasing preliminary results. The survey report will be published in 2019 (Members will receive a free copy). Until then, respondents will have a chance to participate in a webinar for a live discussion of the results. IAU is looking for Members who would like to host the second session of LGEU 2019. This 5-day professional development programme attracts socially engaged university leaders from around the world. In the past, IAU Members have hosted LGEU in Malaysia, Ireland, Colombia, Botswana, Canada and Romania. For the upcoming session in June, we are pleased to welcome participants in Paris, France (see above). Please contact Juliette Becker.

The 2019 Global Forum brings together perspectives from around the world to develop a more nuanced understanding of the relationship of academic freedom and institutional autonomy to democratic culture. IAU is a partner of the Forum, which has developed as a result of the ongoing cooperation between the Council of Europe, the International Consortium for Higher Education, Civic Responsibility and Democracy, and the Organization of American States.
