Dear Members & Partners,
Welcome to the IAU Newsletter!
This month's highlights: only one week is left before the opening of the 2018 IAU Conference on Higher Education Partnerships for Societal Impact—online registration is now closed, but you can register on-site; we've launched the open consultation on the digital transformation in higher education; and applications are open for the first UNICA-IAU joint masterclass on internationalization.
You will also find updates on what IAU did in October to advance our four strategic priorities: internationalization, sustainable development, technology and leadership. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you want to comment on or get involved in any of our activities.
Yours sincerely,
Hilligje van't Land, PhD

Sustainable Development |
| |
On 17 October IAU's Programme Officer Stefanie Mallow organised a workshop at the Future Forward Summit on Sustainable Development (SD) in Brussels. She offered a comparative perspective on how universities in different regions approach SD. Mallow also highlighted the need for fostering diverse understandings of SD as a way to build meaningful partnerships and to successfully advance Agenda 2030 worldwide.
During the summit, IAU together with its affiliate Member COPERNICUS Alliance awarded the IAU/Palgrave Macmillan Essay Prize on "Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development: A New Academic Discipline?" You can read the winning essay here.

Internationalization |
| |
In early October, IAU held its first webinars in English and French on building a successful strategy for internationalization. In total, about 40 people participated from around the world, including Australia, France, Latvia, Kazakhstan and the US. IAU will offer more of such topical webinars in the future.
On 31 October IAU closed the 5th edition of its Global Survey on Internationalization. We have received over 900 responses and will be publishing the survey report in early 2019 (Members will receive a free copy). In the meantime, respondents will have a chance to participate in a webinar for a live discussion of the results.

IAU held a successful LGEU session on 14-19 October in Bucharest, Romania. The unique training programme for socially engaged university leaders brought together participants from Afghanistan, Egypt, France, Ghana, Moldova, Pakistan, Palestine and Romania. The National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA), an IAU Member, hosted the session. On this occasion, the university Senate awarded IAU with the anniversary gold medal ’SNSPA 25 plus 1’, for its contribution to the modernisation of international higher education.
Applications are now open for the next LGEU Session on 2-7 June in Paris, France! (see above)

IAU is developing a new policy statement to outline the key principles and values that must underpin digital transformation. The work is being steered by the Expert Advisory Group and Members now have the opportunity to contribute by participating in a survey (see above). In the future, IAU also hopes to include the voices of students and national authorities. The statement will be submitted for approval to the IAU General Conference in 2020. Members will have several occasions to offer feedback on the draft versions.
