Discoverable Construction Knowledge March Update
The Construction Knowledge Task Group (CKTG) has initiated an open standard for construction knowledge that will allow professional institutions, research bodies and businesses to describe the knowledge they publish in a consistent way.
The creation of this open standard results from the CKTG’s survey undertaken in 2018. The survey explored how practitioners access and engage with knowledge resources. 38% of respondents said they do not have easy access to the knowledge they need to do their job. Also, not being aware of what knowledge is available was found to be the number one barrier to accessing knowledge.
Consequently, this open standard will develop a shared way of publishing construction knowledge so that they are discoverable. This will greatly improve practitioner access to the knowledge they need to safely perform their role, and implement a safer built environment during construction and in-use.
The intention is that the standard will be adopted by CKTG members and wider industry to publish and exchange knowledge in a consistent manner, so that others may build indexes and tools that signpost the most relevant content to practitioners.

The project is being delivered by Barbal, a Bristol-based SME, specialising in standards for the built environment, in close collaboration with CKTG members.
The project has been made possible through a grant from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, with the support of the Open Data Institute. More information regarding the funding application can be found here.

 Kick Off Workshop
The project kicked off formally in February 2020, and a workshop was held at Pearson’s London office. The workshop focused on what it will look like when the standard is implemented, what organisations will go through to adopt it, what changes needed to be made, and ultimately, started a discussion around a standard that is adoptable in industry. Attendees also discussed the importance of creating a standard for a unified approach to describing knowledge.
Full notes from the workshop can be found here.
The project is currently seeking stakeholders to participate in a maximum 30 minute interview and/or questionnaire. If you would like to partake in either of these, please contact the Knowledge Partners Team at Barbal on:
