PROJECT UPDATES

Bryan Elementary

Cawaco helped Bryan Elementary School purchase a 3D printer for the 880 students that use the STEAM lab. For their very first project, Students designed and printed their own Christmas ornaments. Students gained experience with Computer Aided Design program by using their chromebooks to access the web based CAD program and complete the project. Students learned design as well as problem solving during their first attempt at printing!

Conservation Education

The Walker County Soil & Water Conservation District hosted land judging contest, farm field day, cotton gin demonstration, forestry workshop, wildlife school for landowners, outdoor classroom and the Arbor Day program. Litter continues to be a problem in Walker County and the District has been working with the schools to add anti-litter education for the students.

Oneonta Fire & Rescue

During medical emergencies in which patients needed to be ventilated, it was found that some patients were difficult if not impossible to establish an advanced airway. The purchase of the UE Video Laryngoscope allows paramedics to swiftly  secure patent airways in patients in cardiac or respiratory arrest.

Jones Valley Teaching Farm

Cawaco provided support to Jones Valley Teaching Farm to supplement a paid apprenticeship to eight Woodlawn High School students. Students work on the farm to grow, harvest and sell produce grown on the farm. Students gain knowledge not only in farming and agricultural skills, but also business, entrepreneurial and leadership development. Learn more about the Jones Valley Teaching Farm program HERE.

Grants for First Responders

Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire-related hazards by providing direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations, and State Fire Training Academies. This funding is for critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operations efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience.
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities.
The Fire Prevention & Safety (FP&S) Grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants and support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards.
