A Message from the District Superintendent:

Do You Measure Up?

A trip to the nearby amusement park is always a tricky experience for every parent. Certain rides come with certain minimum heights restrictions. This past summer I watched as a young boy pleaded with the go-kart operator to let him drive the big karts and they measured, remeasured and then measured him again against the red line by the entrance gate. In that case measuring up is a real qualifier and challenge for parents of a disappointed kid when he or she is an inch or two too short.

The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians describes a spiritual marker for every believer: God desires for each believer a spiritual maturity that has a defined goal, a set marker.

The goal of your spiritual edification is maturity – that is no surprise. The standard of maturity, however, is to, “attain to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Eph 4:13 NIV) Or as the Contemporary English Version puts it: “Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.” How about that for a standard?

Do you measure up?

Before you dismiss such a high standard of Christlikeness remember this – first century Christians were referred to, derisively, as Christians because in native language it meant they were little Christs. That God would set such a standard is proof positive to me that God is an optimist. Imagine His optimism of grace that believes, no makes possible, for us, through the power of His Spirit, to live in such a way that we are little Christs in our everyday life and to the world.

We can, and do, measure up – by His Grace and through His Spirit when we are fully yielded to his Lordship in our lives.
